5 Ways To Get More From Your Hobby In 2025
As the New Year approaches, it’s natural to start thinking about resolutions. Perhaps you’re considering picking up a new creative hobby (might I suggest sewing?) or focusing on deepening your connection with a craft you already love.
This isn’t about producing more or churning out projects at a breakneck pace – that can lead to overwhelm and unhealthy comparisons, especially if you like to share your creations on social media. Instead, it’s about finding more joy in your hobby, enhancing your skills, and rediscovering the fun without the pressure of chasing perfection.
So here are 5 things you can do to get more from your hobby this year.
Declutter And Organise Your Space
Whether or not you have a dedicated space to craft make sure to take the time to regularly declutter and organise.
If you have supplies stashed in various cupboards through the house perhaps you can find a single cupboard that can become yours? Or do you have a toolbox or kit that regularly becomes a tangled mess of supplies? Give things a regular refresh – a tidy and organised space means you will spend less time searching for what you need and more time creating.
Balance Big and Small Projects
Working on big projects that have a lot of technical aspects or details can be amazing but they take a lot of focus and energy sometimes. So alternate between these and a fun, low-pressure project to help you stay energised. I like to call them palette-cleansers, things like t-shirts and sweatshirts that I can whip up on the machine in a couple of hours without reading the instructions because I’ve already made about 10.
These kind of projects are also the ones I tend to wear more regularly in day-to-day life so I know they will be a big win.
Then I’ll take on a more in-depth project like a shirt, fitted dress or trousers. These kind of projects will take more focus but can also be the most rewarding.
Find Your Tribe
If there is one thing a lot of us are craving, it’s community and connection. Something that can be hard to find in a real way on social media as so much of it can feel like a one way conversation. So finding a community, be it in real life or online that supports and motivates you, shares your passion and lifts you up will add so much to the enjoyment you get from sharing a hobby.
If sewing is your thing check out ThreadySetGo, a new online sewing community hub from SewHayleyJane where you can connect with sewists all over the world through the forum and the virtual sewing socials that will be coming in 2025.
Try Something New
Every day is a school day right? Maybe you want to learn a new technique like sewing a zip or figuring out French seams. It might be that you already know how to sew a zip but you want to really refine that technique to set you up right for your next in-depth project.
Or it could be a simple as trying out a new material that you haven’t worked with before – this year I sewed with sequins for the first time and was able to sparkle my way through Christmas!
Practicing and refining a technique is where the growth happens.
ThreadySetGo will also include an ever-growing library of high-quality video sewing tutorials. With videos for absolute beginners looking to start their sewing journey and wondering how to even thread up a machine and will develop over time with new videos added every month.
Savour The Journey
Don’t let yourself get caught up in comparison or over-produce in order to have something to share on Instagram. That’s not what it’s all about.
Slow down, work at your own pace and enjoy the process. Set the mood even, clearing the space and switching on a podcast, audio book or much-loved box set whilst you prepare a new project and make sure you have everything you need before you get started.
If you are someone who has the time to dedicate an entire day to working on a project that’s great, enjoy it and allow yourself to become fully absorbed. Or, if you are a busy person working full-time and you get an hour at the weekend to dedicate to your hobby then make the most of it. Put your phone on DND and you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve in that hour! P.S – despite what’s in this picture I don’t recommend sewing with Prosecco!
