Laura’s Selena Set
There wasn’t much deliberation on my make this month. The stars aligned when I saw the fabric, and the pattern was newly released.
First things first, how lucky I am this month to be receiving this beautiful Crafty Pie fabric! Y’all know by now that bright pastels are my jive. Throw in some gingham and I’m swooning. The quality is absolutely delicious. Gorgeous drape but it handled so well. An actual dream to work with.
Then on to the pattern. If you haven’t heard of BF Patterns, they are a new(ish) pattern brand coming from the owner of Blackbird Fabrics, Caroline! She is also probably more well known as one half of the hosting duo for the famous Love to Sew podcast.
BF Patterns released their first pattern last year, the Bestie Bag, and has since gone on to release three beautiful clothes patterns. The latest of which is the pattern I chose to make this month – the Selena Set.
The Selena set consists of a halter style top and an A-line skirt. I fell in love immediately.
The top has a semi-fitted darted bodice which gathers into an elasticated waistband. It is cropped, finishing on the natural waist, has a beautiful keyhole opening at the back and neatly finished with bias binding.
The skirt is a simple A-line midi skirt that is partially lined. I used a sandwashed modal cotton lawn from Sew Me Sunshine that was a perfect match for this main fabric with the white base.
It has an invisible zip at the centre back as well as an elastic waistband so you get all the comfort of a stretchy waist, but the invisible zip closure means that you can keep a sleeker silhouette without struggling to get in and out and the the fit feels amazing.
The bit I love most about this pattern is the closure at the front to connect the skirt and top. It is a simple button and loop anchor, but it just looks so cool.
There are two options to finish the back of the top, I decided to go with the button and loop closure as I didn’t want anything tickly on my neck. The other option is extending the neckline bias binding to form ties.
It was a very enjoyable make from start to finish, and a relatively speedy sew. Both garments have a really nice finish on the inside and the whole pattern just felt very considered throughout. The instructions were excellent, as is the drafting. Would I have expected anything less from the sewing bestie of Helen’s Closet!
As soon as a tried it on, I was in love. It feels absolutely amazing to wear and I felt so confident. Normally I would avoid anything this reveals any hint of my mid-drift, but the cut of the top and skirt are spot on, that I don’t feel at all uncomfortably exposed.
Hopefully more sunny days are on the cards for August so I can wear this non-stop and exude all the summer rainbow goddess vibes.
