We all know that AI is here and it’s here to stay, but did you know that marketplaces like Etsy are being flooded by seriously sloppy AI sewing patterns?
A sewing pattern by a genuine pattern designer takes months, or even years to design. With countless iterations of the pattern during the designing phase, grading whether done in-house or outsourced to a pattern grader, testing, altering, photoshoots, editing, pattern writing… there is so much work that goes into creating a pattern.
But AI… AI will take all the information that is available on the web, steal it, regenerate it into something that sort of resembles a pattern in about 10 minutes, with instructions that don’t make sense and would turn a beginner off sewing before you can say overlocker!
I wanted to take a closer look at these horrendous patterns, and find out from real pattern designers about how much work goes into designing and creating an indie pattern for the home sewing community. I even had a go at trying an AI sewing pattern myself.
