Every month I get to chat to one of my lovely subscribers to find out more about them and their sewing journey. This month I caught up with Lindsay (@sewlottiesew)
Tell us about your sewing journey. When and how did you start sewing?
I started sewing in 2016 after the birth of my daughter. I’ve always loved arts & crafts but had mainly done painting & drawing. I had a mini sewing machine, which my parents bought me to use for mixed media art projects, but had never attempted to actually sew with it! I’d seen some handmade nappy/wet wipe wallets on Etsy & thought ‘I could make those!’ So I bought some fat quarters, found a free online tutorial & had a go. I enjoyed it, so started making craft items like cushion covers & bags. It gave me some time for myself in that first crazy, chaotic year of parenthood! My mother-in-law bought me a full size basic sewing machine for my birthday a couple of years ago which made sewing much easier & so I started making quilts. That’s when I really fell in love with sewing.
You have been subscribed to the Classic box since August 2020, what made you want to sign up?
After spending a few years sewing up bags & quilts, I wondered whether I’d developed enough skills to make clothes. I felt a bit overwhelmed when I thought about making a garment as I had no idea where to start, so I asked for Tilly & the Buttons Make it Simple book for my birthday. I saw on Instagram that there were various sewing subscription boxes available which I thought would give me a variety of fabrics to try each month. I did some research & thought the SewHayleyJane box looked fantastic, so I signed up.
Do you have a favourite box since you started your subscription?
I think that this December’s red shimmery fabric was gorgeous & perfect for the Sew Over It Anderson blouse I made. It was definitely one of my favourites. I also love the blue butterfly print double gauze from October’s Dream a Little Dream box. But then I love double gauze, so these boxes are always a favourite!
What is the best thing about receiving a monthly box of sewing goodies?
The best thing about getting the monthly box is that you don’t know what is going to be in it. Having fabric that pushes me out of my comfort zone is great, as otherwise it is so easy to go for the same thing & I am a creature of habit I have to admit! Although, I think my 5 year old daughter would say the sweet treats are the best bit especially as she usually ends up eating these!
Do you have a favourite make from your subscription?
I signed up for the Wild Side Luxury box in May 2021 as a 40th birthday treat to myself & have to say the animal print fabric really wasn’t me. However my brother & his fiancĂ©e had bought me a 1980s vintage new look pattern for my birthday which actually went perfectly & I absolutely love the shorts I made with it.
Are you working on anything at the moment?
We have been invited to a wedding in the Spring, so I’m planning on making my daughter a dress in the blue butterfly double gauze I mentioned earlier. I’m also working on The Fleur Blazer, which was a pattern with Simply Sewing Magazine. I’ve never attempted a jacket, so it will be interesting to see how it turns out!
