Interview; Ethel and Joan
May’s Classic and Luxury boxes included a beautiful set of Dalmatian mini resin buttons handmade by Louise from Ethel and Joan. I caught up with Louise to find out more about her and her business.
Hi Louise, thanks so much for creating these gorgeous buttons for us. What made you decide to start your own business?
I always wanted to use my creativity in some sort of way and when I was experimenting and making buttons for myself I realized this could be a great business. I really believe in the products I make and this passion has transformed from a hobby into a business. Obviously I couldn’t do this without the support of my lovely customers who I am very grateful for.
What was it that drew you to using resin to make buttons in particular?
It all started when I wanted to replicate some vintage buttons I had in my stash. I put a lot of thought into how I could go about it and decided to cast them with resin as it allowed me so much customization
What inspires each of your designs?
When coming up with a design I do it with a person in mind, like the dalmatian mini buttons in this box are inspired by the lovely Barbara @RockingStitch as these are very much her style – a classic colour combination with a little twist.
What does a typical day look like for you?
MADNESS!! But in a good way. I am a busy mum of 2 with a part time job, and always constantly on the go, so most of my creating for the business is done once the kids have gone to bed. This means, as my products are all handmade, it takes twice as long, and calls for a very late night, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I can only dream that in the future I can do this full time as it’s my passion.
Do you have any plans for new products coming up?
Ethel and Joan’s first birthday is coming up in June! So to celebrate I will be launching a special limited range to mark the occasion. Including some new non haberdashery items as well as lovely summery buttons and buckles.
I have so many exciting plans coming up and so many ideas to create more beautiful products, which I am really excited to release in the not so distant future.
