Laura’s June Shorts

Is there anything more summery than a pair of light cotton shorts? Ice cream colours, loose silhouettes and light fabrics.

When I decided to make a pair of shorts for my make this month, the sun was shining, and the sky was clear blue. Alas, that didn’t last long, and we were shortly back to rain.

But despite the downpours, it has remained very warm and humid here in Manchester, so shorts have still been on rotation these past few weeks, and shorts are a perfect make for 1 metre of fabric.

The June pattern from Helen’s Closet was released a year ago. At its core, they’re basic elasticated waist trousers and shorts pattern with a cute drawstring detail, of which I have so many patterns, so they didn’t initially catch my attention. But then I realised that there is another view of the shorts with these overlapping petal legs that I immediately fell for.

The hems are finished with bias binding, a detail I absolutely love – so much scope for fun contrasts and pops of colour. There is a pattern piece to make your own bias binding, but I picked out this super cute multi-coloured gingham bias binding that I think goes so well with the teal stripes of the cotton.

During construction, you have the choice which way you want the over-lap. I chose to have it facing forwards to get the maximum view of that beautiful binding.

As expected with Helen’s Closet, the drafting is great, and the instructions are fantastic. Perfect for a beginner if you wanted to try bias binding hems. Super quick to make as well.

The legs are completely open so its very important to pick a size based on your hip measurement otherwise they will flap open and reveal probably a bit more than you bargained for! Very comfortable as your legs are not at all restricted. I think they would make great pyjama shorts too.

Here’s hoping for sunny days ahead so I can wear these 24/7.
