Make Of The Month; Rebecca
I’m Rebecca and I was thoroughly surprised and happy to be asked to be this months ‘Make of the Month’ by Hayley. I’ve been a subscriber since the beginning of the year and had received this fabric in my first box back in January.
It’s a lovely Lady McElroy viscose florenza crepe, it drapes perfectly and I love the dusky pink colour with the peacocks and flowers. The fabric washes and presses well. I had a hard time deciding what pattern to use it for, as it would be good for a number of patterns. But when the Paper Theory Zadie jumpsuit was released and I saw all the lovely Zadie’s I knew I wanted to use it for this pattern.
The Zadie looks great in a solid or patterned fabric and I think looks great on everyone. It’s the first jumpsuit I’ve made and has made me want to try all the jumpsuits. It’s a relaxed fit that fastens with a belt that wraps around the body, so there are no zips or buttons, which makes it a quick sew. I love the size of the pockets too, you can fit a lot in there.
My measurements are:
Bust 100cm
Waist 87cm
Hips 114cm
This puts me in a size 16 at the bust and 18 for the waist and hips. However, it is described as a relaxed fit and I had read reviews saying it was generous on fit so I made a straight 16 and I’m happy I did. I think it fits great with plenty of wearing ease, which in the summer is what I want.
I am really happy with my fabric and pattern combination and would definitely recommend both. The viscose is a bit shifty when cutting out, so I used my pattern weights and rotary cutter. I had no problems sewing it up and even the bias binding I made from the fabric handled well and I am very pleased with the finished result.
One change I made to the pattern was to shorten the leg length by 3 inches as I am 5ft 4inhes and it’s drafted for 5ft 7inches.
As I mentioned I have been a subscriber since January, I had the Luxury Box for my birthday. It was such an amazing collection of fabrics, pattern and notions that I have continued my subscription myself.
I’ve had subscription boxes before (not sewing related) and none of them have compared to these. I think the whole combination of fabrics, pattern (if your a Luxury Box subscriber) sweet treat and notions are spot on, and I love reading the magazine too with a cuppa.
I love the fact that some of the fabric and patterns might not be what I would choose at first, but it’s good to be surprised and given the opportunity to try something out of your comfort zone. For instance the animal print fabric in a previous months box, I didn’t think I would ever choose animal print. But I made up the fabric straight away that month and the dress I made has been in regular rotation and I have even bought more animal print fabric.
I also love the fat quarters, as I like to make zip pouches, etc and I am currently making a tooth fairy pillow from some of the fat quarters with my eldest.
I can’t wait for the 10th of the month to round and getting to spend a quiet 20 minutes with a cuppa and my new box, stroking the fabric, eating the sweet treat and adding the beautiful notions and haberdashery to my sewing space.
