Spring To Life: Fat Quarter Inspiration
Today however I thought I’d share a few ways you can use them in your dressmaking.
These ideas can be made using any small pieces of fabric you have in your stash, from previous projects, but they are perfect for the fat quarters that come in your SewHayleyJane boxes.
POCKETS
I love having sneaky little hidden gems in my hand sewn garments, from finishing seams beautifully to using contrast fabric where no one can see it. It’s a little extra something that’s just there to make you happy. Use fat quarters when you cut out your in seam pocket pieces.
Alternatively use them to make a patch pocket. I’ve seen some great examples of this being done. If you don’t want your pocket to stand out too much, use the contrasting fat quarter to line the patch pocket, again a sneaky little flash of something brightly coloured and extra pretty to make you smile.
The Crafty Pinup made heart shaped patch pockets out of jersey to attach to her dress and Guthrie and Ghani shows you how to make this sweet little rounded pocket with a top band.
Making your own bias binding is a great way of using fat quarters in your dressmaking as it can be used to close neck and armhole openings as well as finishing seams and hems. Melly Sews shows you how to use one fat quarter to make over 3.5 meters of bias binding.
Once you’ve made bias binding you can go on to use it to make piping, which is a great way of adding detail to seam lines on shirts and blouses, as with the Rosa shirt from Tilly and the Buttons.
Use two contrasting fat quarters to make a reversible, detachable peter pan collar, fastened with a ribbon at the back. This tutorial shows you how.
Did you hear? Embroidery is the hottest trend right now. Spend an evening patching up your worn denim with colourful fabric and embellish with cute little stitched to make a real feature out of it. Picture found on Pinterest
