A monthly box of sewing goodies, delivered to your door

Subscriber Profile; Sophie

Each month I get to find out more about my amazing subscribers, Sophie (@soph_root) has been subscribed to the Luxury Box since December 2020.

Tell us about your sewing journey. When and how did you start sewing?

A number of years ago I inherited a sewing machine from my Grandma, and in order to put it to good use I asked for sewing lessons for Christmas, so in 2017 I started lessons and haven’t looked back! I manage to squeeze in a bit of sewing almost every day, and it brings me great joy and satisfaction (as with many sewers, I am also a great fan of pockets, so I pride myself in adding pockets into practically everything I sew – even my wedding dress!)

You have been subscribed to the Luxury box for a year, what made you want to sign up?

I have been subscribed to the Luxury box since Christmas 2020, thanks to my husband, who gifted my subscription to me (after a fair few hints, it must be said…).

Do you have a favourite box since you started your subscription?

It’s hard to pick a favourite box, because I’ve enjoyed using the fabrics from every single instalment, but I think the March 2021 box just pipped the others to the post – the fabric was totally up my street! I already had the newly-released Leo Dungarees from By Hand London, and was just looking for the right fabric to do it justice, and luckily enough it was posted through my door later that week! The fabric was a joy to work with, and although the dungarees are a little bit wild and “out-there” I get compliments every time I wear them. I also included the ‘Love Yourself Revolution’ label that came in the box, PLUS, it’s got pockets, so what’s not to love?

What is the best thing about receiving a monthly box of sewing goodies?

I was spending a lot of time looking for fabrics and researching patterns, but the subscription has cut that time down significantly, meaning I get more time to sew, as well as receiving lots of unexpected surprises each month. The fabrics are often not something I would choose for myself, but I always love the selection. There isn’t a single fabric I haven’t yet used.

Do you have a favourite make from your subscription?

Along with my Leo Dungarees, my favourite #SewHayleyJaneMake is my plaid Indigo Dress from Tilly and the Buttons, which I made using the brushed cotton from my very first box. The dress is one of my wardrobe staples – I wear it more than any other item of clothing in my wardrobe, because it’s just so comfy and easy to wear.

Are you working on anything at the moment?

In the run up to Christmas I was using my stored-up fat quarters to make gifts for friends and family, but now that’s done and dusted I can go back to a spot of selfish sewing (which is my favourite kind of sewing, to be honest). I’ve just cut the fabric from September’s box, ready to start stitching the Feliz Dress from Fibre Mood, which I think will work wonderfully with layers over winter, and without layers in the Summer! And it will have pockets, of course….
