Laura’s Burnside Bibs
Laura received the Classic box in April and used her 2.5m viscose linen to make a pair of Sew House Seven Burnside Bibs
Let’s face it, when choosing fabric, we are usually drawn to the prints. And if you’re anything like me, the brighter and bolder usually the better.
But we soon get to a saturation point, where nothing in our wardrobe really “goes” together. That’s where your plains come in. The wardrobe workhorses. Something to hinge an outfit together.
Hayley has chosen beautiful shades of linen viscose that are both really versatile and perfect for teaming with your other amazing me mades.
The linen viscose base is also perfect as we warm up to sunnier weather in the northern hemisphere. It has all the wonderful properties of linen whilst the viscose fibers make it softer and less prone to creasing. Winner!
I have been really into dungarees and was playing around with a few pattern ideas and eventually settled on the Burnside Bibs from Sew House Seven; a perfect pairing with linen and will be the perfect Spring transition piece.
Sew House Seven are another company re-releasing their old patterns with a new expanded size range, which is great to see. I was just on the edge of both pattern ranges and decided to go with the curvy range hoping for a better overall fit around the hip and waist.
The pattern has lots of ease in the waist as it is cinched in with the straps. It suggests picking your size based on your hip measurement, which I did, without any pattern grading.
There are two slightly different versions with the Burnside Bibs – View 1 has waist darts and an invisible side zip, whereas View 2 is looser and doesn’t have the zip or waist darts. Adding more volume on my behind isn’t something I need help with, so I went for the more fitted View 1; still gathers but not as voluminous!
There is also the option for either a cropped leg or full length: I went for the cropped. You could also very easily cut it off further up for shorts and make a cute romper.
Construction was an absolute breeze. The fabric was just a joy to work with, handling beautifully and pressing like a dream. I kept envisioning how good the finished garment was going to look, making me smile all the way through.
If you’re a fan of topstitching, this pattern has it in spades! I went all out and used some hot pink topstitching around the front and back pockets, and belt loops. I love the bright pop it adds. Proper summery!
Another positive, the front patch pockets are a really good size. Not too oversized but deep enough to hold your keys and phone.
The only thing I’m a bit miffed with is the invisible zip… which is very visible! I didn’t have a matching colour zip in my stash (which I know I should have checked beforehand) and went with the white one that was in last month’s SHJ box. I’m going to wear them a few times to see if it bothers me enough to change it out.
Overall though, I am absolutely thrilled with how these came out and will be pretty much living in them this summer. They’re so comfortable and light to wear and just love how they look, especially with the pink topstitching.
I know I say this all the time, but I think these are my favourite SewHayleyJane make to date!
