Movie Magic; Halloween Pattern Inspiration

Spooky season is upon us and I love a Halloween inspired movie – perfect for snuggling up with a warm blanket and hot chocolate on those cold, autumnal evenings.

I recently got to thinking about how cool the fashion is in some of my favourite films, so let’s take a look at some pattern inspiration for recreating some of these iconic looks.

Practical Magic

A 90s movie full of cosy, heart-warming and romantic vibes! Starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, the styling isn’t typically gothic or witchy – instead think slip dresses, floral maxi skirts, cami tops and long chunky cardigans.

A favourite look of mine is the tight black cami worn with a long floral skirt by Sally (Sandra Bullock.) You could get the look by pairing the Paradise Patterns Sommar Cami with the Style Arc Genoa Bias Cut Skirt.

The Craft

An iconic movie centring around four teenage girls who pursue witchcraft and use it for their own gain. Another 90s movie, this time the styling was much more classically gothic – think grunge with a Catholic school uniform twist. The slip dress and chunky cardigan was ever-present, and all looks were heavily accessorised with layered jewellery.

I love the outfits in this image and will definitely be using this as inspiration for my Autumn/Winter wardrobe. I’m thinking of using one of my favourite patterns, the Friday Pattern Company Saltwater Slip, layered over a long sleeve tee, such as the Bateau top (another one from Friday Pattern Company). For a chunky cardi, I love the slouchy vibes of the Carrie by Delia Creates.

Heathers

A black-comedy classic movie about the danger of peer-pressure and cliques in high-school, Heathers features some typically 80s fashion looks. The ‘school girl chic’ fashion includes lots of plaid, structured blazers, pleated skirts and coloured tights. Oh, and don’t forget your scrunchie!

The Friday Pattern Company Heather Blazer immediately springs to mind – and the name is perfect! For the skirt, you could try the Bernadette skirt, also by Friday Pattern Company. But if you wanted the true pleated effect, New Look N6755 could be the one for you!
