Secret Garden
I loved putting these boxes together, I think I’ll always be drawn to florals and if I can find florals that are just a little more interesting I get very excited about them.
When I decided on a Secret Garden theme for August I didn’t actually realise that a new film adaptation of the Frances Hodgson Burnett classic novel was to be released in the same month, a very happy coincidence! The 90s version is still one of my favourite childhood movies and I’ll take any opportunity to watch it again, so working with this theme in mind was a huge pleasure. I wonder what other classic novels I could use a starting point for a theme in the future…
Let’s take a look inside Augusts beautiful boxes shall we?
Luxury Box
This fabric…. oh my goodness this fabric! It is so incredibly beautiful, I’m in love. A pale coral background boarder print with little flowers and butterflies in a soft and drapey cotton sateen from the In My Garden range by Hamburger Liebe. I cannot stop stroking this, and cannot wait to make something in it for myself.
I’ve paired it with the gorgeous Marguerite Dress from Sew Over It, a fairly simple dress with lots of skirt to really let the fabric shine. With the boarder running along the length of the fabric, parallel to the selvedge you will need to play around a bit with pattern placement and (if you want to use the boarder) put your pattern pieces on the cross grain, at a 90 degree angle to the grain (where you would normally place your pieces).
Inside the Luxury and Classic boxes you will also find a gorgeous little sunflower thread conditioner from Cobble and Hive made using welsh beeswax in an exclusive design for these SewHayleyJane boxes. Thread conditioner is a great little tool to have for those hand sewing moments such as sewing on buttons, and hand sewing a hem or facing.
All you do is pull a length of thread along one of the sunflowers grooves a couple of times to coat the thread in the wax. You can then run it between your thumb and finger to smooth it down. This helps to strengthen the thread and stop it from tangling as much. Plus, it smells incredible!
Classic and Mini Boxes
The Classic and Mini boxes come with 2.5m (Classic) and 1m (Mini) of a beautiful bold print viscose twill in either a deep foresty green or a bright coral. This fabric has a lovely bit of weight to it as well as having a fab drape and the colours and print mean that I think they will work really well as we start to move into Autumn. Anyone else excited for dresses, tights and boots?!
The fat quarters are a gorgeous selection of blue and purple florals from Craft Cotton Company that just work so beautifully together. These little pieces of fabric are really coming into their own at the moment as they are perfect for using to make face coverings.
As well as a matching Gutermann thread every box includes a length of bias binding in various floral prints as well as a selection of sew on snap fasteners.
I hope you have loved taking a look inside the boxes this month, as always I can’t wait to see what you make with these goodies so be sure to post your makes using #sewhayleyjanemakes.
